What Would a Wise Woman Say? Advice for The Next Gen.

What would a wise woman say?

This is something my therapist always asks me when I pose questions. I guess the intention is for me to reflect on my inner wise woman. Sometimes you just need to step outside of yourself and imagine you were giving advice to a friend. We are often so much more insightful and “wise” when the matter doesn’t affect us personally.

(Yes, I see a therapist. We can get into that another time, but personally I think everyone should have one! Call them what you will, life coach, wellness coach, therapist or plain old shrink. Amazing creatures.)

The term, “What would a wise woman say” sprang to mind yesterday. It was International Women’s Day and I asked some of the most inspiring women I know what advice they would give for the next generation of women in business. The results were amazing. No one piece of advice was the same and all so personal and so insightful. I thought to myself, I really am lucky, to be surrounded by such inspirational and wise women.

So here are their responses. From business leader, to brand manager, to barrister and sales directors, these women are all mothers who are managing to live lives of their own design.

“Be who you are. Completely. Speak up when something feels off, back yourself when something feels right. Don’t be ashamed to sing your own praises and toot your own horn. Rest when you need, say no when you want to and try not to worry too much – theres is nothing you can’t do” – Rebecca, Group Sales Manager

“Don’t underestimate what you are capable of. And don’t let anybody else underestimate you either.” – Catherine, Barrister

“Everything we go through in life is a moment in time. The good, the bad, the challenging times and times of joy. Move through these times knowing that we will move through them quickly and let that give you solace in hard times, but equally let it be a reminder to really breathe in success and achievements in your life when those times come, no matter how small.” – Kristy, Head of State (Legal Services)

“Life is tough.  Its tougher if you’re a woman, a minority, have a disability, are not privileged…and to make it through, and be the best you can be, you need to have the right people in your corner.  People who are fair, kind, encouraging, honest, accountable and who will expect the same from you.  Don’t collect dead weight, but always offer a helping hand to those who need it.  You never know when it will be you.  And most importantly, just be you.  Not all women have to be strong, not all women have found their voice and want to share it.  It doesn’t mean you don’t add just as much value and have just as much to contribute.” – Angie, Business Leader

“Be true to who you are and never feel you have to behave in any way other than true to yourself. What makes you unique will make you an inspiring leader.” – Charlotte, Marketing Director

“Surround yourself with people that inspire you, make you laugh and you can learn from.” – Gemma, Group Business Director

“Be authentic and aim high, you don’t need to be the smartest in the room just the hardest working and always be prepared to roll up your sleeves, no task should be beneath you. Be kind and professional let your work speak for itself.” – Claire, Market Director (Brand)

“Your mind is a powerful thing when you fill it with positive thoughts.” – Theresa, Accountant

Happy IWD2021, everyone!
