How to Start Meal Prepping

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Okay that sounds little harsh, but when it comes to food for your family for the week, it’s kinda true. Personally, I don’t love the idea of a Sunday spent cooking, but then the week goes by and I remember I have ZERO time to cook of an evening. The main concern is my son. He gets picked up from daycare sometimes as late as five-thirty and he’s in bed by seven! Doesn’t leave a great deal of time to cook healthy and nutritious dinners.

So… meal prep it is!

Everyone’s talking about Kayla Itsines right now, and we don’t blame them. After checking out her Meal Prep 101 for Beginners we found some interesting tidbits to help us all get started…

  1. Having a meal plan is super important, there is no use going to the grocery store chucking random things in your cart and hoping for the best when you come out. In order for your meal prep to work you need to know what you are cooking and when.

  2. If you are new to the meal prep concept I would recommend preparing a few days’ meals at a time. How much time that you dedicate to this is completely up to you! You can choose to dedicate a whole day to this or spread it out nightly. Personally, I prefer to take a few hours out of my Sunday night just so it is done and out of the way.

  3. Write a clear plan, and do what works for you!

  4. The point of meal prep is to make life easier for you during the week, this doesn’t mean you have to pre cook all of your food though! For example, you can marinate your chicken breasts, place them in the freezer, and defrost when you’re ready to use them. The same thing applies to homemade turkey burgers etc. Another example is to make one larger batch of your favourite sauces and refrigerate it, rather than make several smaller batches.
